Can I Wash My Mattress Protector?

Can I Wash My Mattress Protector?

Did you know that your body loses approximately half a litre of water during sleep? While a portion of this dissipates into the air, a huge amount comes in contact with the mattress. Add the oils, spills, and other nasty things that cannot be seen easily.

Mattress protectors are waterproof casings that look like fitted sheets, collecting spills, sweat, and lots of bacteria over time. Waterproof mattress covers may be tough against spills, stains, and various kinds of dirt, but they need some care too. The good thing is that many mattress protectors are made of quality fabrics and vinyl that are machine safe.

Here’s how you can take care of your mattress, with some tips and a cleaning time table.

Washing your mattress protector depends on how you use it, how often you use it, and many more conditions. Under regular conditions, a mattress protector can be washed every two months. If you have pets, you will need to wash your mattress more often. If you’re an allergy sufferer, we highly recommend washing your mattress protector at least twice a month to get rid of the dust and other particles that may trigger the symptoms. After getting sick or catching a cold, it is also critical to wash the mattress protector to remove bacteria and prevent the spread of illness. The same goes when you accidentally spill your coffee, get urine or blood stains on your mattress protector. Don’t worry, removing spills from a mattress protector is way easier than treating the stain on a mattress itself when left unprotected.

There are many machine-safe mattress protectors available on the market. However, this does not mean that all mattress protectors are machine washable. In this case, it’s vital to check the mattress cover care guidelines before proceeding with the cleaning process. You can also see what detergent is the best for your mattress protector, and what wash or dry cycle is applicable. Here’s how you can safely wash your mattress protector with a washing machine:

  1. Use a mild detergent. Avoid using bleach as it can affect the colour and quality of the fabric.
  2. Wash your mattress cover with cold water to prevent it from shrinking. If your mattress protector has blood stains, warm water will bond the pigment into the fabric which makes it harder to remove.
  3. You can air dry or tumble dry your mattress protector at low heat settings.
  4. Do not dry clean or iron the mattress protector.

Use these methods in case your mattress protector is not machine washable:

  1. Spot clean the mattress by dabbing the stains with cold or lukewarm water and mild detergent.
  2. Manually wash the cover.
  3. Air dry your mattress after washing.
  4. Like other mattress protectors, we do not suggest ironing or dry cleaning a non-machine washable cover.
